Volusia County Bar Honored With National Award

Belatedly, we at Upchurch Watson White & Max want to congratulate the Volusia County Bar Association on a national award it received earlier this year. The bar association's terrific executive director, Kathie Selover, was present at the American Bar Association's Annual Meeting in San Francisco to accept the Community & Educational Outreach Award from the National Association of Bar Executives (NABE), supported by the ABA and Lexis Nexis.

Law School project The Young Lawyers Division of the Volusia County Bar Association created its award-winning Thinking About Law School project a few years ago, Kathie says. "The board was looking for a service project and decided to target local students who are considering law school after graduation. We have presented at Stetson and Bethune Cookman University but invited students from all area colleges."

A panel of attorneys in various stages of their career -- from a newly licensed attorney and one in private practice to one in government law -- have taken part in the presentations. "We even included a 1L law student on the panel in 2012," Kathie says. "She was a hit with the students!"

The VCBA plans to present Thinking About Law School again in January. For more information, please contact Kathie at volusiabar@gmail.com or (386) 253-9471.
