Who Should Pay for Mediation?

Mediation for a group of county commissioners is going ahead, but who will pay for it depends on who is participating. Three board members announced they would reach into their own pockets to pay their share, saying arguments among commissioners smack more of the personal than the professional. The other two resisted.

Mediator Sandra Upchurch says a long, uphill battle has already begun. “It is never a good omen for a productive mediation when the parties already in dispute over one matter broaden the dispute to include issues concerning how to pay to have it resolved. To the mediator, retired judge William D. Missouri, I say 'Godspeed, my friend. You have a mountain to climb before you even get to mediate the matter at hand.'”
