Upchurch Watson White & Max Mediation Group Opens Ocala Office

As part of its push into North Central Florida, Upchurch Watson White & Max Mediation Group has opened a seventh Florida office here, in the landmark Concord Square Building, 7 East Silver Springs Boulevard, Suite 500, and has begun conducting mediations there. The new facility includes two updated conference rooms plus the office of Renée E. Thompson, a well-known Ocala litigator who joined UWWM as a mediator in May. Other panel members who reside within the region are Carl B. Schwait, who also joined the mediation group in May after serving as senior and managing partner for Gainesville law firm Dell Graham, P.A., and Brandon Peters, who came to UWWM in 2014 from his own independent Central Florida mediation practice.

City of Orlando Proclaims Oct. 16-22 ABA Mediation Week

For the second year running, the City of Orlando has proclaimed the third week in October Mediation Week. The theme of the observance is "Celebrating Mediation in All Its Diversity, highlighting the broad scope of mediation and its benefits."

ABA Dispute Resolution Section Elects Mediator Richard Lord to its Council

The American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution recently announced that Florida mediator Richard Lord has been elected as a 2016-2017 Council member. He will serve a three-year term and is currently the only member of the Council from this state. Mr. Lord, a shareholder with Upchurch Watson White & Max, also is co-chair of the Section's Mediation Committee, which is currently organizing its ABA Mediation Week observation, set for Oct. 16 to 22.

Three Upchurch Watson White & Max mediators will speak at Mediation Institute 2016 in Orlando on Sunday, Aug. 21. They are panelists for a session titled "How Do You Deal With This? Ethical Dilemmas and Practical Quandaries During Mediation." The theme for the two-day conference, the premiere event of the Professional Mediation Institute, is "Getting the Most out of Mediation: Tips and Tools for Everyone Who Attends Mediation." The Institute is focused on educating mediators, with emphasis on evaluative mediation techniques.

Ricardo J. Cata and Howard Marsee, both dispute resolution professionals with Upchurch Watson White & Max Mediation Group, presented two separate programs for the Florida Dispute Resolution Center's 24th annual conference on Friday, Aug. 12, 2016. Ricardo's presentation, titled "Diversity in Mediation: Domestic and International Challenges," was part of the morning agenda. That afternoon, Howard spoke on "The Language of Mediation and Conflict Resolution."

FSU Law Dean Emeritus Don Weidner Joins Upchurch Watson White & Max as Mediator

It’s been a brief retirement for former Florida State University College of Law Dean and Alumni Centennial Professor Donald J. Weidner. Today, he officially joins the panel of neutrals at Upchurch Watson White & Max, a Florida- and Alabama-based mediation group. College of Law dean Don Weidner. Dean Weidner is a leading scholar on partnerships, fiduciary duties and real estate finance, and his mediation practice is apt to reflect those interests. He formally lists unincorporated business organizations, mortgages and mortgage substitutes, complex leasing arrangements and business disputes and breakups among his areas of expertise.

Shareholder Bob Cole Attends Florida Bar Section Leadership Conference

UWWM Shareholder Robert A. "Bob" Cole recently attended the 2016 Section Leadership Conference, presented by The Florida Bar in Tallahassee. Bob is chair elect of The Bar's Alternative Dispute Resolution Section and a member of its Executive Council, the decision-making body of the section. "UWWM is well represented on the council," Bob said. Mediator Ricardo Cata was asked to join in June and will be legislative chair in 2019; Shareholder A. Michelle Jernigan is the section's treasurer and editor of its newsletter; and Mediator/Arbitrator Lawrence Kolin also serves on the council.

Mediator Albert Tetrault Attends Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association Convention on Behalf of Upchurch Watson White & Max

Albert R. Tetrault, the newest addition to Upchurch Watson White & Max's panel of dispute resolution specialists, is attending the Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association Summer Convention in Austin, Texas, this week on behalf of the Florida- and Alabama-based mediation group. “We are excited about bringing Al’s broad experience and expertise to the firm for the benefit of our clientele in the aviation arena,” said John J. Upchurch, founding principal and CEO of UWWM. Mr. Tetrault, a resident of Palm Coast, Fla., and several of the group's other mediators will join forces to firmly establish its aviation practice area and develop a deep reservoir of knowledge about mediating aviation and related matters. These efforts formally begin with the convention, whose continuing legal education program runs through Saturday and includes programs such as “Aviation Claims – A Different Focus” and “Grant Assurance Contract Compliance for General Aviation Airports” presented by attorney-experts from throughout the U.S.
