In Memoriam: Retired Mediator, Former Judge Richard S. Graham

Upchurch Watson White & Max Mediation Group mourns the loss of our friend and colleague, Judge Richard Shaw Graham, who passed away on June 2, 2026, at the age of 83.

Known to many simply as “Dick,” Judge Graham devoted nearly six decades to the law, public service and the pursuit of justice. A native of DeLand, Fla., he earned degrees from Florida State University and Stetson University College of Law before beginning a distinguished legal career that included private practice, service in the U.S. Army Reserve Judge Advocate General Corps, elected office in the Florida House of Representatives and a decade on the Volusia County bench. Throughout his career, he earned the respect of colleagues and litigants alike for his intellect, professionalism and unwavering commitment to fairness.

Among his many accomplishments, Judge Graham is remembered for his courageous advocacy on behalf of Jesse Daniels, a young man who had been wrongfully institutionalized for years under Florida’s mental health laws. His efforts helped secure Daniels’ release and contributed to reforms that influenced Florida’s Baker Act. It was one of many examples of Judge Graham’s willingness to stand up for what was right, regardless of obstacles.

After retiring from the bench, Judge Graham joined UWWM, where he served as a mediator from 2012 through 2021. Drawing on decades of legal and judicial experience, he earned a reputation for helping parties resolve even the most challenging disputes. Among UWWM staff, he became affectionately known as “the closer,” a reflection of his remarkable ability to build trust, narrow differences and guide litigants toward resolution.

While Judge Graham’s professional accomplishments were substantial, he will be remembered for much more. He was admired for his warmth, keen wit, generosity, integrity and dedication to helping others. He brought grace and humanity to every role he held, whether as attorney, judge, mediator, public servant, colleague, friend or family member.
