Mediator Ricardo Cata in Center of International Dispute Resolution Conversation

Ricardo Cata, a Miami-based mediator with Upchurch Watson White & Max, increasingly finds himself at the center of academic and practical discussions about international commercial dispute resolution — at a time when Miami is being touted and is growing as a hub for international arbitration. First among Ricardo’s current engagements is his organizational service to the 2016 International Litigation, Arbitration & Transactions (ILAT) Conference at the city’s Conrad Hotel on Friday, Feb. 26.

UWWM Principal Kimberly Sands to Speak at WIND Conference Feb. 2-3

Kimberly Sands, a principal with Upchurch Watson White & Max Mediation Group, has been invited back to speak at the annual Windstorm Insurance (WIND) Conference and plans to tell “The Truth About Bad Faith and Extra-Contractual Litigation” for breakout sessions on days 2 and 3 of the four-day event. Ms. Sands — along with fellow attorney faculty members Donna DeVaney Stockham of Stockham Law Group, P.A.; Gerald Albrecht of Butler Weihmuller Katz Craig; and Finley T. Harckham of Anderson Kill — will present “a multi-discipline, 360 degree perspective of bad faith litigation.” Organizers say the goal of the program is “to provide the attendees with the bad-faith knowledge necessary to effectively represent their clients. Attendees will leave the program with a better understanding of how bad faith affects the claims they are handling for their clients, which will lead to better results and greater success.”

Mediator Chuck Mancuso Now Member of National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals

Charles A. “Chuck” Mancuso, mediation counsel with Upchurch Watson White & Max since 2013, is among five new Florida members named by the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals for 2016.

The NADN, a professional association whose membership consists of attorneys “distinguished by their hands-on experience in the field of civil and commercial conflict resolution and by their commitment to the practice of alternative dispute resolution,” has more than 900 members throughout the United States, organized into local chapters such as the Florida Circuit-Civil Mediator Society.

Mediator Michelle Jernigan set to tell ‘Truth About Gender Divide’ at CLE seminar

Today (Monday, Jan. 11, 2016) is the RSVP deadline for mediator A. Michelle Jernigan’s presentation of a complimentary CLE seminar on behalf of the Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers.

Michelle is ready to speak on “The Truth About the Gender Divide.” This seminar will reveal the current research on gender differences in negotiation, their origin and specific strategies for women to bridge the divide.

Robert Cole Speaks at NBI Seminar on Mediation in Florida

Robert A. “Bob” Cole gave a presentation titled “Post-Settlement Agreement Issues: What Mediators Need to Know” at a National Business Institute seminar in Jacksonville earlier this month. The seminar, “Mediation in Florida: Keys to Effective Settlement Negotiations,” was designed to teach techniques for attorneys, paralegals, mediators, arbitrators and other neutrals in order to build their settlement skills. It featured a faculty of veteran mediators and attorneys and offered 7 credits of Continuing Legal Education and 7.20 credits of Continuing Mediation Education through The Florida Bar. Listening to a recording, which is now available at nbi-sems.com/Details.aspx/R-70729CM, also makes attorneys and mediators eligible for the same credit.

Mediator Robert A. “Bob” Cole Co-Chairs ABOTA Educational Program in Jacksonville

Mediator Robert A. “Bob” Cole spent Dec. 8, 2015, teaching high school students about the 7th Amendment right to trial by jury in civil cases and is geared up to do it again next week. His teaching stint is part of a new program presented by chapters of the American Board of Trial Advocates; he is co-chair of the Jacksonville chapter’s 7th Amendment Symposium effort. “With this and the Teachers Law School, we are building a strong relationship with our school district,” Bob says. “We are doing another program Dec. 15, 2015, and plan to do two more in 2016.”

Mediator Lawrence Kolin Recognized as National Law Journal Trailblazer

Lawrence Kolin, a mediator and arbitrator with Upchurch Watson White & Max, is one of only 50 attorneys to be honored as The National Law Journal’s 2015 Litigation Trailblazers. He plans to accept his award at a reception honoring the distinguished recipients in New York City on Dec. 14. “The National Law Journal proudly recognizes the people who have truly ‘moved the needle’ in facilitating the changing ways that law firms conduct business,” says Kenneth A. Gary, the journal’s vice president and group publisher. “Whether it be technological developments, operational efficiencies, marketing and business development breakthroughs or research – we think this list embodies the spirit that will shepherd and shape modern law firms as a business going into 2016 and beyond.”
