BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Sept. 30, 2014) -- George M. "Marty" Van Tassel Jr., leader of the Mediation Center at Sirote & Permutt P.C., will become Upchurch Watson White & Max's newest Birmingham-based mediator on Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2014).

Mr. Van Tassel may be best known for his more than 3,000 mediations, but he also enjoyed a long and fruitful career as a litigator, representing clients in all of Alabama's federal and state trial and appellate courts and trying cases as lead counsel in most of Alabama's 40 judicial circuits. He represented both plaintiffs and defendants in trials seeking damages for personal injury, property damage, economic loss and wrongful death, as well as for injunctive relief.

He is a graduate of the University of Alabama and its school of law and has served as an adjunct professor of mediation process and practice there. Among his many qualifications are memberships on numerous panels of neutrals in Alabama's state and federal courts and certification by the Alabama Center for Dispute Resolution.

"Marty Van Tassel has been one of Alabama's premiere full-time mediators since 1999," said Rodney A. Max, a principal at Upchurch Watson White & Max and a leader of the group's Alabama and South Florida teams. "His reputation for quality mediation services is both well known and widespread throughout the State. We are very pleased to add Marty to our top-shelf mediation team."
