How Professionalism Can Help in a Negotiation

Writer and mediator Howard R. Marsee knows more than a thing or two about professionalism, and he is sharing in a big way this month. First, he has published an article titled “Reflections: Professionalism as a Tool of Negotiation” in the fall 2015 edition of The Professional, a publication of the Henry Latimer Center for Professionalism. Mediator Lawrence M. Watson Jr. wins Sharon PRess Excellence in ADR Award

One of the first orders of business at the 23rd annual conference of the Florida Dispute Resolution Center was to present Lawrence M. “Larry” Watson Jr., a founding principal of Upchurch Watson White & Max Mediation Group, with the Sharon Press Excellence in ADR Award. At the July 31, 2015, opening plenary session, Janice M. Fleischer, outgoing director of the DRC, commented she was glad to be taking part in honoring Mr. Watson at the final DRC conference over which she will preside. She explained the Press Award is not given annually, and that it takes action by a special committee of five leaders in the field to determine whether there will be an honoree.

UWWM’s “Lean In” Group Introduces Grit Program

Thanks to all who participated in UWWM’s “Lean In”-inspired luncheon on July 29, 2015, at UWWM’s Maitland office. Partner Kimberly Sands and Shareholder Michelle Jernigan presented an introduction to The Grit Project developed by the ABA Section on Litigation, Women in Litigation. A. Michelle Jernigan to Present ‘Using Brain Science for Better Mediations’ July 28

One of Florida’s first Supreme Court-certified mediators, A. Michelle Jernigan, also has a decades-long interest in psychology and the brain. In a Webinar sponsored by the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution, she will discuss the basics of brain structure and function in clear, simple terms — along with practical ways to apply this knowledge at the mediation table. Ms. Jernigan, a shareholder with Upchurch Watson White & Max, will present “Using Brain Science for Better Mediations” at noon Tuesday, July 28.

UWWM’s Lawrence M. Watson Jr. to Speak at California Conference

One of the first circuit civil trial mediators to be certified by Florida’s Supreme Court, Lawrence M. Watson Jr. not only does, but also teaches. On Tuesday, he will present a session titled “Planning, Organizing, Formatting and Executing the Mediation of a Complex, Multi‐Party, Multi‐Issue Lawsuit” to the American College of Civil Trial Mediators’ annual meeting in Dana Point, Calif. “We will lay out a ‘typical’ complex litigation dispute – then walk through ways we might organize and structure a mediation of that case,” says Mr. Watson, a founding principal of Upchurch Watson White & Max Mediation Group.

Florida Mediator Lawrence Kolin to Speak at NYC Masters Conference

Lawrence Kolin, a mediator and arbitrator with Upchurch Watson White & Max, has been invited to speak about streamlining electronic discovery at the Masters Conference for Legal Professionals on Tuesday, July 21, in New York City. “Whether you’re dealing with e-discovery in a new, socially networked world, find your company expanding globally and thus facing international discovery issues, or planning for the future of e-discovery in your firm or company, you know there’s a divide between what is in practice today and where your firm needs to be in the near future,” according to conference organizers. “Legal professionals must develop strategies for spanning this e-discovery divide before it expands further across traditional borders, whether physical or technical.”
