William “Bill” Baxley, II, brings to mediation one of the most extensive and diverse legal careers in Alabama history. A former state attorney general and lieutenant governor, Bill has tried, supervised or overseen an extraordinary range of cases across virtually every substantive area of law, giving him a rare ability to evaluate disputes from all sides.
Bill earned his law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1964. He then clerked for the Alabama Supreme Court for the following year. In 1965 he joined the Air Force and was on active duty for 6 months. His next 4 years were spent serving in the Air National Guard. He was then offered a commission as an officer in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps in the Army National Guard. He served as the youngest elected district attorney in Alabama, quickly establishing himself as a highly effective trial lawyer.
At age 28, Bill was elected attorney general of Alabama, becoming the youngest attorney general in the nation. In that post, he supervised all state litigation and personally tried numerous complex and high-profile matters. During his career, he has appeared in court in every county in Alabama as well as every federal court in the state, handling criminal prosecutions, civil actions, class actions, major insurance disputes and appellate matters.
Following public service, Bill returned to private practice, representing clients in high-stakes litigation nationwide. His experience includes supervising litigation for one of Alabama’s largest insurance companies, handling both sides of major class actions, prosecuting and defending complex civil and criminal claims, and extensive appellate advocacy. He has represented clients in a number of states including: Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, California, Texas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Kansas.
Having served as a prosecutor, defense counsel, plaintiffs’ counsel, appellate advocate, military officer and statewide legal executive, Bill brings a comprehensive and practical perspective to mediation.
